DIY Bare Bones Fascinator - Template

The first part of my tutorial for the template must be done by an adult as it involves a utility knife and is very awkward for small hands.

How to Make Your Cup Cover Template

Materials:
Paper Cup (9 ounce)
Scissors
Utility knife
Pencil
White paper (8 1/2 by 11 inches)
Card stock

Find the seam and with your scissors make a straight cut from the top of the cup to the lip of the bottom. Next carefully, using your utility knife (in my case a box cutter) make a straight cut through to the bottom lip and make an X cut to release the bottom. Use a small pair of scissors to cut the bottom, do this slowly as your goal is to carefully detach the bottom. Make little V's to release the cup bottom and roll the bottom lip to expose the bottom arc. Trim but take your time, as once traced you have a template.

So this is what your cup template will look like:

Put a pile of books on it to flatten this puppy and trace onto card stock. The one thing to remember is add a one inch seam allowance to one end so you have an overlap when making the paper cup cover.

Tomorrow, plastic or paper this cup will become a fascinator for creative 11 year olds. Follow me on the DIY tab.

Plastic Cup Top Hat Fascinator - Mother Nature is Not Amused

Top Hat before the Magic
So my project hit a big snag yesterday - nowhere in town could I find plain 9 ounce paper cups. I always try to be eco-aware and plastic clear cups are just not my thing but in the back of my cupboard there they were looking forlorn.

So my post tomorrow incorporates my secret sin - a plastic cup. Ya'll forgive me? This is when living in a small rural community can challenge our best intentions.

Hey Look - A Saint Paddy's Day Fascinator

Okay so I figured out how to simplify the DIY. Yippee for paper cups and paper plates. See you Friday. Remember I am creating a craft session for 11 year old girls so my thinking is create the white fascinator with ribbon and let them go wild adding stick-on embellishments.

DIY Teaser - Oh Look Mad Hatter Fascinators

Okay, so enough about how I get inspired - all things are unique to you.

So, I am thinking of making some fascinators for my brother's twin daughters birthday celebration. This is embarassing, I think they are 11 but I am so bad at birthdays and ages. I would just call up my Mum and ask - can't do that any more. So I apologize girls but I promise to make some cool fascinators.

Follow me to Friday.
